Fitness and Food

Focusing on my enjoyment of both fitness and food, but at the end of the day an outlet for other things as well

It was a good feeling

So, tonight I went to the gym with my brother to work on chest and biceps. Now, for the past few months my brother hasn’t been able to work out at all because of school and two jobs. However, since he just finished up school and quit his side job he now has time to start working out again.

When I first started working out he was the one who showed me a lot. Often times when we did exercises involving weight plates he would just do a lower weight to accommodate me, but up his rep count. That way we wouldn’t have to waste a ton of time constantly switching off weight plates.

That leads us up to tonight. He has to get his body back into shape so tonight we mainly focused on dumbbell excercises to save time since we were lifting different weight amounts. At the end of the workout, though, we went to go do the decline barbell press and I got to say “Don’t worry, we can keep it at a lower weight and I’ll just do a higher number of reps.”. It was a good feeling. My brother is still a beast, though, and I figure in about a months time he will be back to out lifting me. Whatevs, it may only be a short lived victory, but I will take it.

Anonymous asked: You are such a true muscle man bro dude.

Both a ‘bro’ and a ‘dude’??? Holy shit, my life is complete! I’m pretty sure I can just stop now because I have accomplished all I ever dreamed of. Thank you!

Being serious this time

I had a pretty solid back workout this morning.  I switched things up a bit and I am pretty sure that this will be the back workout I stick with for a while:

Romanian  deadlifts: 95x12, 135x8, 155x6, 185x6, 205x6, 225x5, 245x5, 265x5, 225x5, 185x5
Straight back cable row: 100x12, 110x10,120x8,130x6,140x4
Good Mornings: 65x10, 95x6, 115x6, 135x6, 155x5, 155x5, 135x5, 115x5
Wide grip Lat pull down: 110x10, 120x8, 130x6, 140x4
Close grip Lat pull down: 2 drop sets of 130lb-100lb-80lb
Seated rear deltoid fly: 110x8,120x8,130x6,140x4, 120x4, 110x4

As with squats, I like to make sure that deadlifts are the first thing I do on back day because I want to get the most out of those.  The only draw back is that at 6am my flexibility isn’t the best and, therefore, it takes me a long time to get through them as my muscles slowly start to stretch out.

I kept getting strange looks at the gym today and I can’t figure out why.

So I get to the gym at about 6 this morning and proceed to do a bit of stretching.  I then walked over to the free weight area and moved a couple of flat benches over because they were in the way.  I then proceeded to hit it and hit it hard.  I did a circuit of:

jumping jacks
leg lifts
air squats
standing calf raises
leg kick backs

Then to really get my heart rate up I laid flat on the ground and did some air swimming.  Like, I just totally imagined I was at the Olympics racing Michael Phelps.  I’m pretty sure I could have taken him.

I guess everyone was staring because they were jealous of my swoleness.  I’ll probably show up at the gym on Monday and everyone will be doing it.

Maybe I should make a Tumblr graphic of the above workout so everyone will know it’s mine.

It’s go time! Let the curling in the squat rack commence!

(This is what I had to squat next to today. I mean, all the music, concentration, and determination in the world couldn’t stop me from occasionally looking over at this guy while attempting to stifle a laugh.)

This is my bro cabinet, complete with a hideous cabinet lining. The container without the label is protein powder (I was going through protein power withdrawals and basically went into hulk mode and tore the label off in my eagerness to get to the protein) because a true bro always has protein powder.

Why is the post gym shower so difficult?

Seriously, unless I have somewhere I have to be immediately, trying to get myself to shower takes forever. Right now I just got home from the gym and should take a shower. What am I doing instead? I am playing around on Tumblr, then I am going to eat, and then I will watch the Olympics. After all that I will take a shower, but by that time all I will really want to do is go to bed.

Sometimes by the time I finally convince myself to get in the shower there is a small voice in the back of my head saying “Don’t worry, you waited so long that all the sweat dried off anyways. You should just throw on some deodorant and cologne and call it a day”. Don’t worry, however, I never actually listen to that voice …well, at least not often.

  • Mom: You and your brother should take your dad's boat out the next time you go fishing.
  • Me: Sounds good.
  • Mom: I'll have him show you how everything works first.
  • Me: Yeah, ok.
  • Mom: Well, he needs to show you. It isn't as easy as you think. For instance, what does it mean when you honk the horn once, twice, or three times?
  • Me: Ugh, easy. Rangers returning, wildlings, and, oh shit, here come the Others, respectively.
  • Everyone at table: ::Silence and Blank Stares::
  • Me: Really? No Game of Thrones fans here?
